South Dakota Surpasses Oregon in Moving Study

Oregon No Longer Number 1 In Moving Study

According to newly released data from United Van Lines, Oregon has slipped behind South Dakota & Vermont in inbound moves

The Study

United Van Lines’ annual study tracks customers’ state-to-state migration patterns over the past year. Oregon has been high on the list in recent years, topping the chart in 2016. Generally, many Western states have been competitive in this study in the past decade.

United began tracking migration data patterns annually in 1977. They’ve maintained this study for 40 years. Additional to their hard numbers on numbers of inbound vs. outbound moves, they survey their customers on why they are moving from state-to-state. This somewhat more soft data does rely on self-reporting of reasons, but it gives economists, the Real Estate sector, and business people valuable insight into demographic and macro-economic flows.

What the Numbers are Saying

Oregon continues to perform well in United Van Lines’ study. While it may have fallen to number 3 with 67% inbound moves, it still tops the broader trend of Western states representing the top destinations for movers. Idaho, Washington, Nevada, and Arizona were all significantly net positive in moves in 2016.

The West continues to benefit from the trend of outbound moves from densely populated Eastern states. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania all had greater than 56% outbound moves. This trend has been burgeoning since the recession of 2008. Retirement continues to be a key driver for this trend, though employment is generally the highest rated reason.
